A Mother’s Memoir of Loss

“Unfinished Symphony” is not only a story of profound grief, but also a guided journey to healing and a story of human resilience and triumph over one of the most painful human experiences. It further chronicles the life of her son who navigated a debilitating depression and anxiety and how he survived several suicide attempts until he lost his battle to suicide. Grace also shares how her son achieved extraordinary accomplishments despite his mental health challenges. The book also takes the reader through the lens of the caregiver on what she did in order to help her son. The book will also help the readers to honour their relationship with their lost loved one, find a meaning in the midst of their grief, and the courage to carry on with life.


About the Author

Grace Mabumbulu is the mother of Akhona Mabumbulu, who passed away by suicide in May 2021. Grace is a mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, business executive and a mental health advocate.



Following her son’s passing, Grace has dedicated herself to speak openly about her mental illness and that of her late son to groups, churches, individuals, and organizations.



She has 30 years’ experience in Human Resources of which 20 years has been at management level.



Grace currently lives in Johannesburg, South Africa with her dog, Buddy. She enjoys spending time with her family, acrylic painting, and walking Buddy.
